Around the Google Blogs for the Week

This post has been in the works for almost a week, and I have finally been able to get to finishing it. Since I started this post, plenty of stuff has happened to open my eyes to some SEO techniques and y’all could get the monumental benefit of my knowledge.

You have to sign up for the information, though. If you have already signed up, it is all good, but I am making all the effort in the world to get more folks involved. I need a bigger audience.

So, go sign up on the sidebar. I have no idea what kind of response you shall get from the sign-up autoresponder, so if it is something weird, e-mail me. When I get a bunch of folks in place, I am going to give y’all my data from the Google Traffic Studies that I have been doing to go from virtually zero traffic to around 2500 hits a day in Search Engine Traffic on my little personal blog about nothing. And, TELL YOUR FRIENDS, TOO.

Not only that, but I am also going to give y’all the tricks to getting a HUGE number of backlinks if you are willing to do the work. I might even give y’all my spreadsheet where all you have to do is change the data in one cell and start cutting and pasting.

Just curious, how would you like to have the NUMBER ONE blog in your area of expertise? We can do that easily, too.

    Now, to the Internet BLOGSHOW!!!

In case you are wondering what won the Best Antivirus program of 2010, it is F-Secure, the suite that I have used since 2000 and got hit hard with the Love Bug Virus. I am NOT an F-Secure affiliate and I still use their product exclusively. In the past eight years, I have only had one problem with any virus or spyware.

Firefox 4 Beta was released on last Friday. (Alexa Rank 65, HA!)

If your RSS Reader is getting chock full and you need to start smalling it up a bit, try TLDR.IT. Their service turns any page or .pdf into a summary. You can only imagine how many times I have used this to summarize SEO E-Books.

Basil has a Roku v. Apple Tee-Vee shootout.

If you are a big e-book reader, you should try the Kindle Lending Club. I have not used this service yet, but the description sounds pretty good.

I am checking out Quora right now and would like to know what y’all think about it.

If you are a smartphone user, then you probably figured out how to use Google Goggles, but did you know that all of your searches and stuff can be accessed by going to http://www.google.com/goggles/history? Well, now you do.

The Link Medic has a review of Klout. Using this service is certainly in my future.

With the SIXTH! birthday of my personal blog barreling down upon me, I wondered if longevity mattered and SEOmoz actually answered my question on White Board Friday. Short answer, NOPE.

If you are a Google Enterprise user, good news. Google promises ZERO PLANNED DOWNTIME. That seems like a pretty good deal, huh?

Here are last week’s Google Apps Highlights.

G-Mail gets spell checker for search. It still cannot make a latte for me, though, which is maddening.

I am not sure, but I think that I have had Android 2.2.1 on my X since mid-December, but here are the Android 2.2.1 platform highlights, anyway. It appears they have addressed quite a few shortcomings recently, too.

Still MORE features of the new AdSense interface.

Oh, autogenerated content? Google NO LIKEY.

I am about to embark on some testing with the Google AdWords to help with driving traffic. This was much helpful, too.

In case you were wondering, here is Problogger’s Definitive Guide to improving Advertisement Clickthrough.

AdWords, Keywords, Go Mobile, dang, this is getting complicated!

And monetize your exit pages, YOU!

And danged if Google didn’t go and change the AdWord urls right when I was getting started, too!

Download the new AdWords Editor, here.

Google Engage launches to help small businesses. If you are a web guy or IT guy, you need to sign up for this stuff. Remember, Google owns the world.

Coming soon to Google Tasks near you.

Check out all the new stuff at Picasa.

A Problogger’s top five favorite Google Analytics features.

If you have not signed up and started using Hotpot, why are you ruining the world? You know that the Phonebook is useless these days. Start helping out.

Integrated Apps to help with tax season with Google Enterprise. Dang, there is a bunch of stuff there!

I am going to have another post this week with Google stuff and some WordPress stuff, too. Hell, I might even mention stuff going on with RIM and others. Keep coming back, y’all.

Oh, and you need to get on my list, too. Top right. Sidebar. Do it.

Please take the time to comment.

Get indexed, get ranked, get traffic

No one can deny that you need traffic to your website in order to succeed online. And free traffic beats everything else. So where do we get free traffic? Google and other search engines.

How do we get free traffic from Google?

This is something you’ve experienced first hand countless times. You load up Google or another search engine. Enter in a word or phrase you want to research. Then you click on one of the pages that in displayed. That website owner has just enjoyed the benefit of free traffic. What need to figure out is how to get you free traffic.

If you’re like most people you only click links on the first page or two. In fact, the first page of results receives almost all the free traffic. And believe it or not, the first 3 results receive over 70% of the traffic.

This means that to get any real traffic you need to be on the first page in Google. And this means Google needs to “rank” you as a top 10 result. And this bring us to…

    What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimization is a measure of how well Google and other search engines think your website matches the search terms people are typing into their search boxes. The intricate formula Google uses to figure this out is really only known by Google. There are several factors that we do know.

    Getting indexed

Before you can get ranked, Google has to first know your site exists. This is called getting “indexed.” What this means is that Google visits your site and records information about it in their database.

Google needs to actually find your site in order to index it. Getting a link from another site will accomplish this easily. Google will actually follow the links on sites it already has indexed to find new sites and index them.

Twitter and Facebook updates are great places to put links to your site. Google visits these sites many times every day. So your new link will get indexed very quickly.

    Gaining ranking

After this first hurdle, you need to start gaining ranking. Just getting indexed does you almost no good, considering that Google has billions of pages in their database.

There are three components of gaining ranking:

    • Content
    • Links
    • Activity

    SEO content

This is also called on-page SEO. You need to make sure your content matches the search terms you’re going after. Obviously, the article you’re reading now is about search engine optimization. Google knows that not just because the words search engine optimization show up. Another reason is because there are related words, like website traffic, too.

You also need to make sure the title tags, outbound links and the domain itself match the topic of the page. Each of these plays a roles in Google determination about your site.

    Your links

The next thing to consider is your links. The links coming in and the links going out are included in this. You want to make sure you have more inbound links than outbound links. The more inbound links you have the better your ranking will be.

A very easy way to get a lot of links to your site is through article marketing. To use this technique you write articles related to the topic of your websites. You have to also write several different versions of your articles. And then upload a different versions to a bunch of sites that allow you to add content. And the more you do the better.

    Increasing your activity

The last thing we know for sure is that Google likes to see active sites. A page that was created 3 years ago and hasn’t been touched since won’t rank well. Regular content updates to your site are expected. One way to keep adding new content it through RSS feeds.

Comments from other people on your page are another fantastic way to keep your content updated. This means you need to get real live people to your site, as well. One simple method for doing this is to use forums.

Create profiles on lots of forums about your site’s topic. Visit often and make posts. Then put a link to your site in your profile. This gets you inbound links. And it also gets people to your web page.

    Conclusion

Each step listed above is critical. Unfortunately, rewriting your articles again and again. And creating a bunch of forum profiles. And visiting all the sites to post up your comments and articles takes a really long time. And the bad news is that you probably won’t do it.

The good news is that there are automated software programs out there that will do this for you. So my best advice is to automate as much of this as you can. This way you’ll actually do it. By taking these steps you practically ensure you’ll get free traffic from Google.
